Date (Датировка текста)

The date of the inscription is given in the "history/origin" section of the header. The text in the date field needs to be normalized in the following way:

  1. I century C.E.
  2. II - IV centuries C.E.
  3. C.E. 275/6

NB: use plural "centuries" for a range. Always use stops for "C.E." and "B.C."; but otherwise do not end the field with a period. See below for removing parenthetical reference to criteria.

The <origDate> element then needs to be populated with attributes to record this date numerically, for example:

 <origDate notBefore="0301" notAfter="0400" precision="low" evidence="Палеография">
                        <seg xml:lang="ru">кон. IV–V вв.</seg>
                        <seg xml:lang="en">IV–V centuries C.E.</seg>
 </origDate>

Evidence is usually palaeography or style of the image/decoration and palaeography.

  • All years must be given in 4 digits. B.C.E. dates are given negative numbers.
  • note that centuries begin in year 1 and end in year 100.
  • half centuries should be dated 1-50; 51-100
  • "early", "middle" and "late" centuries should be dated 1-33, 34-67 and 68-100 respectively.
  • if a date is given to a century or chunk of a century, then add @precision="low" to indicate arbitrary values
  • if a date is described as "circa" or "approx," then add @precision="medium"
  • if a date is described as "possibly", "probably", or written with a question-mark (?), then add @cert="low"

Dating criteria (Обоснование датировки)

There is a generated vocabulary for the Russian and English versions.

            <listBibl xml:lang="ru">

Greek text

Includes the text of the inscription, the critical apparatus, translation and commentary. In the "body" section.

The edition division is given an @xml:lang for the language of the inscription (Greek ="grc").

For all "Leiden" text markup issues, IOSPE uses the guidelines specified by EpiDoc

Within an ab type="edition", the text is divided into its individual lines.

  <div type="edition" xml:lang="grc" xml:space="preserve">

            <div type="textpart">

               <ab>

                  <lb n="1"/>

                  <lb n="2"/>

               </ab>

            </div>

Critical apparatus (Критич. аппарат)

Following the standard EpiDoc "external" apparatus markup; i.e. line numbers in tei:app/@loc, references to bibliography in rdg/@source, etc. (ApCrit content is considered to be Latin, so no separate English/Russian versions.)

<div type="apparatus">

            <listApp>

Epigraphic mark-up is included according to the paper edition, e. g. in cases like:

  • replace square bracketed text (usually only complete words) with <supplied reason="lost">
  • expand abbreviations (usually only names) as <expan>M<ex>arcus</ex></expan>
  • subaudible words, e.g. "Eirene (wife/daughter) of Apollonios", with <supplied reason="subaudible">

It may contain references to other inscriptions, articles and studies. English version will be provided. In the "body" section. The tag used is:
